This is my quick and easy version of char siu, “home edition!” This won’t be like your typical roasted pork from the Chinese supermarkets – but more of a pork “simmer.” It does however have the same great char siu taste! It also tastes healthier, less fatty, and it doesn’t take a long time to make – woohoo to a fast, yummy dinner.

Time: 30-40 minutes
Price: under $5
- 1 pound pork shoulder (cut up into 1″ cubes)
- 1 packet of char siu seasoning mix
- 1 can coconut soda
- 1 onion (cut into thin slices)
- 2 cloves of garlic (minced)
- Marinate overnight with garlic and enough char siu seasoning to coat the pork entirely.
- The next day, stir fry half of the onion and all of the pork until brown on the outside.
- Add enough coconut soda to cover about half of the pork and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
- Flip the pork over and let it simmer for another 20 mins (add in extra coconut soda if you think it’s needed) until most of the liquid has evaporated.
- Add in the rest of the onions at the end and sautee a little longer.

I don’t know about this one. Homemade char siu doesn’t taste quite right. It reminds me of the ones they served at the college cafeteria or in Michigan.

Just think of it as another meat dish and don’t compare it to the roasted pork

This doesn’t look too appetizing!
